Keyword research often means switching between tools. You brainstorm with AI, check search volume and keyword difficulty in Ahrefs, then organize everything in a spreadsheet.
Connecting Ahrefs to Claude brings that data into your chat. You can find keywords, review their metrics, and explore related opportunities through follow-up questions.
Here’s how to do SEO keyword research in Claude using the Ahrefs connector.
Connect Ahrefs to Claude
Before you start keyword research, connect your SEO tool to Claude.
Claude uses Model Context Protocol (MCP) to connect with external tools. The Ahrefs connector lets it retrieve SEO data, including search volume and keyword difficulty.
- Open Customize → Connectors in Claude and click +.
- Search for Ahrefs, select it, and click Connect. I use Ahrefs in this example, but you can also use other SEO platforms if they have MCP or connector support.

- Sign in if prompted, then select your Ahrefs workspace and account.
- Click Allow to authorize the connection.
- Open a new chat and check that the Ahrefs connector and relevant tools are enabled.

Start Your Keyword Research in Claude

Use a regular chat to conduct your research. Claude also has Cowork for more advanced or scheduled tasks. But for this process, we’ll focus on a normal chat.
Start with a specific question or topic.
For example, imagine you have a new client working in the GEO space. Instead of opening Ahrefs separately and figuring out which keywords to search for, you can tell Claude what you are researching and ask it to find relevant keywords.
Claude can then use the connected Ahrefs data to return information about the keywords it finds.
Depending on your request, you can get information such as:
- Keyword
- Keyword cluster
- Search volume
- Keyword difficulty
This gives you a useful starting point for understanding the search landscape around your topic.
The important part is that you are not relying on Claude to make up search volume or keyword difficulty. The connected SEO tool provides the data, while Claude helps you interact with and organize that data.
This is similar to how I approach using ChatGPT for keyword research, but connecting Claude directly to your SEO tool makes the workflow much more conversational.
Refine Your Keyword Research With Follow-Up Questions

Once you have an initial list, use follow-up prompts to explore promising topics or narrow the results.
For example, ask Claude to:
- “Use Ahrefs to find more question-based keywords related to these topics.”
- “Show keywords with difficulty below 20 and monthly search volume above 100.”
- “Find additional variations of [keyword] in the same country.”
- “Group these keywords by topic and suggest which could belong in one article.”
Keep your target audience and country consistent when comparing results. Before choosing a topic, review its search results to check intent. Lower keyword difficulty alone doesn’t make a keyword a good fit.
Turn Keyword Research Into a Content Strategy
Use your strongest keywords to develop content ideas, outlines, and briefs. For example, ask Claude to group related question-based keywords into a content cluster, suggesting a main topic and supporting articles.
I use a similar approach with Claude Projects. For the next steps, read how to use Claude for content creation.
Prioritize topics that match your audience’s needs and business goals, then use the keyword data to guide your writing.
Final Thoughts
You don’t need to completely change how you do keyword research to use Claude.
If you already use Ahrefs, connecting it to Claude gives you another way to interact with the data you are already paying for. Start with a simple keyword question, review the results, then keep refining your research with follow-up prompts.
The key is to treat Claude as part of the research workflow, not as a replacement for keyword data.
By combining real SEO data from Ahrefs with Claude’s ability to understand context and respond to follow-up questions, you can move from keyword discovery to deeper research much faster.
